Our Three Areas of Action

Empowering Through Education

Creating Thriving Communities

Changing Systems

Urban Scholars

The Urban Scholars program is SJLI’s flagship initiative — a multi-year, high-touch program that prepares young men of color for college, career, and civic leadership. Rooted in the belief that academic excellence and social awareness are inseparable, Urban Scholars blends rigorous academics with mentorship, community-based action research, policy advocacy, and restorative practices.

Scholars are not simply prepared to succeed in higher education — they are trained to return to their communities as leaders, organizers, and advocates who lift others as they rise.

“Through SJLI I learned the wonders of education and the better man I could become.”

— Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Karunwi, Urban Scholar Class of 2022

Higher Pathways

The journey does not end at high school graduation. Created in 2022, the Higher Pathways program supports SJLI alumni as they navigate the transition to college, career, and independent adulthood through three parallel, high-touch tracks.

  • College Pathway to Success: Holistic support for alumni pursuing higher education, including academic advising, financial literacy, and wrap-around counseling.
  • Career Pathway: Workforce readiness, professional development, and career coaching for alumni entering the workforce.
  • Economic Growth Track: Resources and mentorship to support alumni in building long-term financial stability and economic independence.

Alumni are never alone in their journey. Through resilience circles, peer support groups, and annual community events, Higher Pathways ensures that SJLI’s family extends well beyond the classroom.

Food Justice & Community Health

SJLI’s food justice programs address one of the most pressing inequities in our communities: access to fresh, healthy food. Since 2020, we have distributed more than 4 million pounds of produce to Inglewood residents, senior facilities, schools, and faith-based partners across South Los Angeles — because no family should face food insecurity in one of the wealthiest regions in the world.

Community Organizing & Policy Advocacy

Uplift Inglewood, SJLI’s community organizing initiative, anchors a coalition of more than 68,000 residents, businesses, and civic organizations committed to advancing housing justice and youth equity in Los Angeles County. We train community members to conduct research, testify before decision-makers, and build the political power necessary to change the policies that shape their lives.
